The worldwide handset market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, owing mainly to the worldwide recession. According to IDC, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009, approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during the first quarter of 2008.
