German project ‘Aktiv’ aims to integrate PNDs with the car

“Aktiv” is a German research project of the Interior division of the Automotive Group at Continental, Ford Research and PTV on the design of a communications protocol intended to help improve the integration of portable navigation systems into vehicles.

Via Bluetooth or similar transmission technologies, vehicles can recognise portable navigation systems or mobile phones with navigation functions in the future. It will then also be possible to operate the mobile devices quite simply via the existing controls on the steering wheel, centre console, or via the vehicle’s speech recognition system. The visual and acoustic feedback will then be transmitted to the driver via factory-installed indicators and speakers.
