France using intelligent cameras for road intersection safety

Lyon, France: The Ministry of Ecology and Transportation is promoting the use of radar traffic lights to reduce accidents at road intersections due to traffic light offenders.
Intelligent cameras will be installed just in front of the traffic lights. When the traffic light is red, the cameras will monitor all vehicles not stopping in time at a safe distance before the junction. Offenders will lose 4 points on their license and will be fined 135 Euros.
The cameras are clever enough to ignore vehicles with orange sirens. Other vehicles crossing the traffic light in order to give way to emergency and rescue service vehicles will also not be fined.
The Government plans to install 150 such cameras by the end of this year.
