China Unicom announced the launch of its 3G mobile music service on July 10 and has made almost 100,000 songs available for users to download.
According to the announcement, the service, available through China Unicom’s mobile music service platform 10155.com, will not charge users download fees, while data traffic fees will be incorporated into service bundles, and not charged separately as long as users do not exceed quotas. The operator said that the free songs are possible through its cooperation agreements with major record companies.
China Unicom’s 3G WCDMA network can offer a download speed of up to 14.4 megabits per second (Mbps), enabling download of a song within seconds. Although the operator’s 2G GSM users can also use the service, downloading a song could take 30 minutes or more, according to the announcement.
