Shanghai Handy TV starts data broadcasting over CMMB

Shanghai Handy TV Co.Ltd., the exclusive operator of CMMB mobile TV in Shanghai, launched a data broadcasting service on July 20, the company announced on July 21.

This marks the first time that stock market information is broadcast through the CMMB network in Shanghai. It will be offered for free to CMMB mobile TV subscribers in the city, according to the company announcement.

The company plans to bring more content to the service in the future including bond, foreign currency and commodity market information.

Shanghai became the first city in China to provide commercial CMMB mobile TV services on March 12, 2009. Users pay a monthly subscription fee of RMB 20 ($2.92) for seven TV channels, which is considered high by Chinese standards.

There are approximately 10,000 CMMB mobile TV subscribers with Shanghai Handy to date.
