India: Bangalore Police launch free traffic information via SMS alerts

Article contributed to TN by Stephen Longden from SBD.

City police have tied up with Mumbai-based firm SMS GupShup to provide alerts about traffic jams to commuters for free. All the users need to do is register by sending an SMS.

A successful trial has already been completed and the service will go live in mid-October.

The police department will provide daily alerts. Users need to register for this service by sending an SMS – ‘JOIN BTP’ – to 567678 in order to receive four SMS alerts a day regarding traffic movement in the city.

While alerts are sent during peak hours (morning/evening), those regarding emergency situations like diversions, VIP movements, road blocks, political rallies, etc will be sent as per the situation.

This service is already available in Mumbai and currently 25,000 users receive traffic alerts.
