India to decide between 5.8GHz and CALM for ETC

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will conduct three pilot studies for identifying the best technology for electronic toll collection. These pilot studies are likely to be started during the year 2010 and will be completed in the year 2010-11.

Three locations have been identified for pilot project for technology options. These are Panipat-Jalandhar section of NH-1 in the States of Haryana and Punjab, Gurgaon-Jaipur section of NH-8 in the States of Haryana and Rajasthan and Surat-Dahisar section of NH-8 in the States of Gujarat and Maharashtra. All the three locations are 4 to 6 lane widening projects on BOT basis.

Since, there are various technologies available with varying capabilities, before the full scale application, pilot studies have been proposed. In the pilot studies, different technologies such as 5.8 GHz Microwave (Passive), 5.8 GHz Microwave(Active) and Communication Air-interface Long and Medium Range-infra red (CALM-IR) are to be studied.
