One in two drivers (51%) are aware of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), but only one in four drivers have this system fitted in the car.

These figures emerged from a survey of 2,000 road users, which was commissioned by the German Road Safety Council (DVR), and conducted by the Ipsos institute.

The survey also revealed awareness and fitment levels of other ADAS systems such as radar-based distance control, brake assist, night vision, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.

Although fitment levels of ADAS were low, 54% of respondents claimed that in the past 12 months they had found themselves in dangerous situations on the road, which could have been avoided if the necessary ADAS system was fitted.

The German Road Safety Council (DVR) is trying to educate people of the various benefits of ADAS systems through its campaign ‘Bester Beifahrer’.
