Volvo has launched Range Assistant – an new infotainment app that allows users to further optimize the driving range of their vehicle. The app is currently in its beta stage and was released as part of an over-the-air software update rolled out to all Volvo EVs powered by Google’s Android Automotive operating system.

Developed by the OEM in-house, Range Assistant helps Volvo drivers keep track of the available range of their EV and optimize it through smart energy management and advice on driving style from an efficiency perspective. It also provides drivers with an indication of the estimated remaining driving range and real-time energy consumption, and helps them understand the key factors that affect their range. A range optimizer functionality in the app can adjust the climate system automatically to optimize driving range, reducing the frequency of charging stops on a long route.

Volvo Cars plans to continue developing the app on the path to its full release and introduce additional features. One of these features will provide drivers with recommendations to help coach them on how to adjust their driving style and speed in order to maximize range. Range Assistant will be made available to XC40 Recharge drivers through an OTA software update and be installed from production start on the C40 Recharge.

Drivers will also see software version information in their center display and be notified of a planned software update via the Volvo Cars smartphone app. Through it, users can also follow the progress of the update through app notifications delivered throughout the process.

The roll-out of Volvo’s latest software update, which includes Range Assistant, is planned to start immediately. All applicable models are expected to be updated by the end of October.
