BMW has announces the new second generation 4 Series Gran Coupe. The 2022 model line-up provides customers with new and enhanced options for infotainment and connectivity.

At the center of the new vehicle’s infotainment offering is its inclusion of BMW iDrive 7 as standard. The system is hosted across BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional, consisting of a 10.25-inch center control touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The instrument display provides the driver with access to key in-vehicle systems, including the navigation map, media content and status indicators for the driver assistance systems.

iDrive 7 also allows drivers to select their preferred way of interacting with the new 4 Series Gran Coupe. Users have the choice between using the center display’s touchscreen, the proven BMW Controller, multifunction steering wheel buttons, voice control, or optional BMW gesture control to control and interact with their vehicle.

Also featured in iDrive 7 are two USB ports, a WiFi interface, a built-in SIM card (with 4G LTE connectivity) and the Connected Package Professional as standard. This enables the use of the OEM’s digital services, including BMW TeleServices and intelligent emergency call, Real Time Traffic Information with hazard alert, and Remote Services via the My BMW smartphone app. 

The automaker’s cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system offers fast route calculation carried out dynamically, based on real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The system works with the vehicle’s voice assistant to allow the user to input their destination by telling it to the assistant. In return, the system describes points of interest (POIs) along the route in detail, with reviews, opening times and photos all included.

It also uses Connected Parking to assist drivers searching for a parking space near their destination. Upon selecting their destination, they receive an indication of the parking availability at the destination for their estimated time of arrival.

Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android compatibility allows customers to access an array of digital services including Siri, Google Maps, Apple Music and WhatsApp. Key information from Android Auto’s Google Assistant and Google Maps can be viewed in the control display and instrument cluster as well as the car’s optional Head-Up Display.

Available for iOS and Android devices, the My BMW App acts as a new interface to the car, providing information on its status at any time by logging in with their BMW ID. Depending on the equipment fitted, it also enables various remote operations – including remote vehicle locating, locking and unlocking. Users can also monitoring the car’s surroundings remotely through the app’s Remote 3D View feature. Further functions include the ability to send destinations from the smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system, manage OTA updates and install new in-vehicle features.

Also featured in iDrive 7 is a deeply-integrated Amazon Alexa assistant. In addition to controlling key vehicle functions through the Hey Alexa voice command, users can also control compatible smart home devices from the car.

The BMW Digital Key enables customers with a compatible iPhone to lock and unlock their new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe via NFC with their phone. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car and, once inside, the engine can be started with the user’s phone by placing it in the wireless charging tray. The Digital Key can be set up through the My BMW App, where the car owner can share access with up to five other users. Through it, the user can also creating a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.

Activated by the Hey BMW prompt or at the touch of a button, the latest generation of BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant frequently acquires new capabilities. Through it, users can adjust HVAC settings or control some vehicle functionality. The assistant is also capable of learning routines. For example, then it is in use, the system recognizes whether the driver or front passenger is speaking and responds accordingly.

Production of the new 4 Series will begin in July 2022, with the first cars expected to be delivered in August 2021. Production of the all-wheel drive 430i xDrive Gran Coupe and rear-wheel drive M440i Gran Coupe models will follow.
