Marelli has announced its plan to become carbon neutral across its operations by 2030. The goal, which ultimately aims to build a sustainable business, will be achieved by the supplier through a series of measures aimed at minimizing energy consumption, ensuring the use of renewable energy, and neutralizing any unavoidable emissions.

Further to the environmental and CO2 targets set within its mid-term strategy, this new step defines the steps Marelli will take to achieve them. It’s actions are expected reduce greenhouse gas emissions from direct sources owned, or controlled directly, by it, as well as indirect emission from energy purchased and used by the organization.

One way Marelli hopes to achieve carbon neutrality is by abating energy consumption, and related emissions, through continuous implementation of energy efficiency Monozukuri. This series of strategies and activities was recently introduced by the organization and aims to reduce energy usage at plants, including the introduction of high-efficiency and energy saving equipment.

The strategy also encompasses as improvement activities like streamlining operating lines in production sites. Within this stream of activities, further actions will be implemented by the organization to minimize energy consumption in facilities. Here, Marelli will focus on improving the efficient use of utilities, and in its processes, with the introduction of new equipment and machinery.

Another part of the strategy is the organization’s commitment to ensuring that all electric energy used in its operations comes from renewable sources, or is neutralized through certified carbon credits. The focus here will be on photovoltaic and wind generated power. Renewable energy will be either self-generated through developing on-site systems, or purchased through specific certified contracts as Power Purchasing Agreements and green supply contracts.

Any residual emissions that cannot be captured within Marelli’s primary efforts will be neutralized by participating in certified carbon projects worldwide. The supplier will also monitor new technologies and solutions that support decarbonization and work to achieve its goals.
