Volvo has revealed the EM90, its all-new premium MPV set to launch first in the Chinese auto market.
At launch, it will offer customers an estimated maximum range of 458 miles (738 kilometres). This range is realized by a 116 kWh battery, which Volvo expects will be capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. Powered by an e-motor with 268 hp (200 kW) power output, the new EV can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.3 seconds.
Similar to Volvo’s EX90 flagship SUV, the EM90 is equipped with the hardware necessary to enable bi-directional charging. This feature allows the battery to be used as a power bank to charge other electric cars and appliances.
Additional comfort is provided by sound isolation and road noise cancellation technology, while dual chamber air suspension and silent tyres reduce this volume further. Together, these features work to minimize road noise and maximize the sound offered through the EV’s 21-speaker setup from Bowers & Wilkins.
The vehicle’s infotainment system is headed by a 15.4-inch infotainment screen, and powered by Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies. Where available, it also delivers 5G connectivity to provide a smooth experience of its key digital features and services. An in-vehicle voice assistant, for example offers heightened interactions and is visualized through a refreshed Volvo avatar on the infotainment screen.
An additional, high-definition 15.6-inch screen is mounted in the roof and can be folded down to provide a multimedia viewing experience for all occupants, or the ability to join a business video meeting – where a camera can also be activated as needed. The screen also supports mobile screen projection, and is equipped with a wide variety of third-party apps. It is also part of a multi-functional set of screens and smart surfaces that enable a variety of in-cabin scenarios. Here, drivers can quickly adjust the layout of the interior space to suit different activities – turning into a theatre, meeting room, or bedroom for the rear seats. Activated through the use of a switch or voice commands, this function will also see the vehicle screens, seats, windows, air conditioner and lighting to be adjusted accordingly.
As with all new Volvo cars, the EM90’s features, functions, and services will improve over time through a series of post-purchase OTA software updates. A digital key and remote functions, enabled through the Volvo Cars smartphone app, provide easy access and control of the car.
