ChargeScape, the joint venture formed by BMW, Ford, and Honda in 2023, has officially commenced operations and appointed its first CEO and CTO. The JV offers a software platform that integrates EVs into the power grid, aiming to shore up grid stability and save drivers money on EV charging.

ChargeScape’s technology wirelessly connects to EVs and, working with participating utilities, manages the flow of electrons in line with real-time grid conditions. Here, it can help temporarily reduce demand when the grid is constrained through smart charging (V1G) and send energy back into the power grid when needed (V2G). In engaging with these activities, ChargeScape customers can be rewarded financially for their flexibility.

The JV builds upon the work its founding OEMs conducted on smart charging through the Open Vehicle-Grid Integration Platform (OVGIP), which counts multi-state utilities such as Duke Energy, Xcel Energy and Eversource Energy as clients.

Following the official launch of the joint venture, BMW, Ford and Honda announced the appointment of ChargeScape’s first CEO, Joseph Vellone. Before joining ev.energy, Vellone worked as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, where he was part of the firm’s energy and environment practice. The JV also appointed Kalidindi Raju as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO), who previously led a variety of high-performing technology organizations.
