Rivian has confirmed plans to launch its first Rivian Adventure Network charging locations that will allow non-Rivian EVs to charge alongside its own R1T pickup and R1S SUV. Using a new charger design capable of accommodating any compatible EV in North America, these sites will work to support Rivian’s goal to electrify the transportation sector.

This rollout will be spearheaded by Rivian’s first next-generation site, its Joshua Tree Charging Outpost in California that recently opened to the public. This year, Rivian expects to open further locations at sites in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York. These locations were chosen by Rivian to encourage EV adoption, and use those EVs on longer journeys.

At the new charging locations, new Rivian-produced chargers will deliver rapid charging up to 900 volts and feature CCS connectors, with support for North American Charging Standard (NACS)-equipped vehicles with an automaker-approved adapter. Support for native NACS connectors (also known as SAE J3400) will come with a future hardware update. Each charger will also include a larger display and a ‘tap-to-pay’ function designed to enable a more seamless user experience with or without the Rivian mobile app. Rivian confirmed that drivers of its own vehicles will continue to benefit from the same charger authentication experience deployed today.

A key element of these new chargers is their meeting of design and siting requirements that make them eligible for relevant federal and state infrastructure funding. This will allow Rivian to expand its charging infrastructure further, with a focus on strengthening reliability and access for all EV drivers. The new charging sites will also offer drivers fully renewable energy matching, which leverages Rivian’s selective renewable procurement process to enable EV drivers to actively participate in the decarbonization of the electrical grid.
