Jatco, a manufacturer of automatic transmission systems, has opened a new factory in Sunderland that will produce electrified powertrains for a nearby Nissan plant.
Occupying a 138,840 square-foot area, Jatco says that its new facility represents an investment of £48.7 million (€57.6 million / $59.8 million) into the UK. The facility was also supported by a grant from the UK Government. Located in the International Advanced Manufacturing Park, the Sunderland factory will initially produce Jatco’s 3-in-1 powertrain, which modularizes and integrates the motor, inverter and reducer – making them smaller and lighter.
While building the Sunderland plant, Jatco is more broadly preparing to accommodate its advanced manufacturing facility in Washington to help its new business division, JATCO UK, begin supplying powertrains to Nissan Motor Manufacturing (NMUK). Localization to NMUK models will then begin from 2026, when the facility is scheduled for completion.
