LG Display, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, has commenced mass production on its 40-inch Pillar to Pillar (P2P) automotive display. Through P2P, the company is looking to accelerate its push into the era of SDVs by scaling production of its premium automotive display solutions and achieving its goal to revolutionize the driving experience.

The subsidiary’s 40-inch P2P display offers an ultra-large automotive panel that covers the area in front of the driver and front passenger’s seats. An SDV-ready solution, LG Display envisions the display helping users more easily see a variety of information and control key vehicle functions. Here, it says the display raises user convenience by allowing several advanced infotainment functions to be displayed simultaneously, from a digital dashboard and navigation to climate control, movies, music, and even games without screen transitions.

Leveraging the display’s size, this layout aims to provide users with immediate access to a broad range of information, and quicker access to key controls when compared to traditional automotive displays where this information, such as navigation directions, may disappear or shrink when accessing functions such as climate control or music.

The P2P’s Switchable Privacy Mode (SPM) viewing angle control technology has also been applied to help the driver stay focused on the road ahead. The mode allows for the front passenger to watch movies or play games on the display in front of them, with the display appearing blank so as to not distract the driver.

Viewing angle control technology has, more broadly, emerged as a key safety feature as vehicle display sizes increase, with LG Display’s own solution retaining its ultra-high-definition resolution while still controlling the viewing angle. Working alongside these features is the display’s all-new local dimming technology, which reduces both the heat it generates and the power it consumes to run more efficiently.

LG Display confirmed that the first vehicle to receive the P2P display will be Afeela 1, the first vehicle from the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. The all-electric sedan pairs Sony’s IT and entertainment technologies with Honda’s vehicle manufacturing capabilities. In the car, P2P is expected to maximize AI-based driver assistance systems and various entertainment functions.
